Sitting up straight

Am I the only one who finds it hard to sit up straight? I catch myself slouching in the sofa, hanging over my desk, leaning over tables, shoulders crooked, spine at an angle. I remind myself, sit up straight, and feel taller and more active and two minutes later I’m peering at my screen again with my body out of alignment.

Each friday (ok then, not each friday) I go to Pilates and discover all the aches and pains in my back. I focus on posture, suck in the gut, lower the shoulders and remember, Oh yeah, this is what it feels like to stand up straight! I resolve to do a little stretching now and again, or at least make an attempt to lengthen my body instead of going with the bulge. But bad habits are hard to break. It’s another friday. Todays Pilates session will remind me again of how stiff and old I am, and sitting up straight behind the computer, like I’m doing now, has become a position that feels unnatural.

  1. Standing up straight is something I find requires a conscious effort!
It’s funny how we think we’re standing straight but when you make the effort, you realise that you have never really stood that way!
